Georgia Aquarium otters test positive for virus that causes COVID-19

ATLANTA — The Georgia Aquarium said Sunday that some of their otters have tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19.

The Asian small-clawed otters have been exhibiting mild respiratory symptoms like sneezing, runny noses, mild lethargy and they have begun coughing.

“We’re happy to report they are doing well and expected to make a full recovery,” aquarium officials said. “They are off exhibit and being cared for behind-the-scenes by our expert animal health and care teams.”

The aquarium believes the animals may have gotten the infection from an asymptomatic staff member despite following all recommended health and safety protocols.

“The risk of animal-to-human transmission is incredibly rare,” officials said. “The Asian small-clawed otters at the Aquarium do not have direct contact with guests.”
