Emory University to begin semester virtually

ATLANTA — Emory University students will not be heading back to the classroom as quickly as they expected.

As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to surge, Emory University’s president, Dr. Gregory Fenves has announced that the spring semester will begin virtually.

The campus will open on January 4 as anticipated, but all classes will take place online.

If conditions change, classes will resume in-person on January 31. If they are able to return then, most undergraduate classes will be canceled on January 27 and 28 so students can travel back to campus.

Residential halls will remain open throughout the remote period, but students are being encouraged to delay their returns to campus.

Dr. Fenves says that 97% of their students, faculty and staff have been vaccinated against COVID-19, and everyone will be required to have received a booster shot by January 19.

“I understand that beginning the semester with remote learning and teaching is inconvenient,” Dr. Fenves said in a letter sent out Tuesday. “But we must be adaptable during this surge so we can continue our important work—learning, teaching, creating, and discovering—in the face of this ever-evolving pandemic.”
