ATLANTA — Georgia hospitals are seeing more cases of COVID-19 throughout the state lately.

Data from the CDC shows hospital admissions went up 30 percent between July 29th and August 5th.

“I think when we look across the nation we are seeing hospitalization numbers rise,” Dr. Jayne Morgan, with Piedmont Hospitals told Channel 2′s Michael Doudna.

Morgan says there is no reason for alarm.

Numbers are still very low compared to the height of the pandemic.

“We still expect mild cases of COVID,” Dr. Morgan said “That doesn’t mean people won’t be hospitalized and people won’t be sick.”

A new variant of the virus seems to be fueling the number of cases.

Dr. Morgan says it is part of the Omicron family, and is acting in a similar way.

A booster formulated to better protect against variants like Omicron should be rolled out in October.

“Boosters are available now, [But] they are not going to be the updated booster. So have that conversation with your doctor. It’s going to depend on your medical status.” Dr. Morgan said.
