ATLANTA — Downtown Atlanta is growing with investment and construction in the new Centennial Yards.

Neighbors and visitors can now get cheese fries and burgers from Shake Shack.

“We were the first to sign the lease at Centennial so we’re super excited about that,” Will Stringer, the Area Director of Shake Shack, told Channel 2’s Linda Stouffer.

All of this is coming together in the area that used to be the Gulch, a maze of empty lots and parking levels across from Mercedes-Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena.

The $6 billion development is opening one business at a time.

“What you’re looking at now is the second-largest mixed-use project in the United States,” Centennial Yards President Brian McGowan said.

McGowan says the next openings are a second hotel and an entertainment venue.

“We’re going to build 2,000 apartments, 1.2 million square feet office, 900,000 square feet of retail,” he said. “All that residential and office and hotel activity will keep all those restaurants occupied.”

An Atlanta city official told Stouffer that in the next five years, Atlanta’s urban core will be more connected, walkable and active than ever.
