ATLANTA — At some point on the morning of Juneteenth, a 'Black Lives Matter' street mural appeared on the Atlanta BeltLine in bold yellow block letters.
The painting stretches along the Eastside Trail between near New Realm Brewing and Ponce City Market. Murals were also painted on temporary construction fencing along the BeltLine featuring the names of black people killed by police including Rayshard Brooks, George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
It’s unclear who painted the murals in Atlanta. Channel 2 Action News has reached out to the BeltLine for comment.
The mural is similar to others that have popped up across cities in America including Washington D.C. and Seattle as the Black Lives Matter movement gains momentum across the country.
The original mural in D.C. was commissioned by city leaders and was painted on the street across from the White House. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser renamed the street “Black Lives Matter Plaza.”
