Bears, bucks to be hunted near site of South's largest wildfire

ATLANTA — U.S Forestry officials say firefighters battling wildfires in the north Georgia mountains and hunters could cross paths Thursday morning.

The U.S. Forest Service is allowing the annual 5-day bear and buck hunt in the Cohutta Wildlife Management Area.

Firefighters have contained most of the wildfire that has burned 28,000 acres.

"The fire is now 93 percent contained. You can safely say that you can hunt outside that area and it's not a risk to the hunters," Lucinda Nolan with the U.S. Forest Service said.

Hunting runs through Dec. 4.

Fire managers say the Rough Ridge blaze is among more than three-dozen large fires burning in the Southeast covering a total of more than 120,000 acres.
