Yet another bridge on Cheshire Bridge catches fire

ATLANTA — Another large fire broke out under a bridge on Cheshire Bridge Road Saturday afternoon, months after another bridge on the same road was severely damaged by a fire.

Video shared by Atlanta Fire Company 29 shows black smoke billowing from underneath the bridge near I-285 where Cheshire Bridge turns into Lenox Road.

The blaze caused warped steel and spalling on the concrete.

Firefighters said they found grills, mattresses, propane tanks, office chairs, couches, dressers and generators in the fire. The area is well-known for being home to a homeless encampment.

No one was injured. It’s unclear how long it will take to repair the bridge or if any portion of the road is closed.

In August, a bridge over a small creek near Faulkner Road was severely damaged by afire and has remained closed over since. That fire spread to a gas line that runs under the bridge.

Atlanta fire said there have been several other fires along the same corridor that started in homeless camps.

In 2017, a fire under I-85 at Piedmont Road caused a section of one of Atlanta’s most major intersections to collapse. Investigators determined that fire was also set at a homeless camp.
