ATLANTA — Scattered showers and wet roads will ruin warm December temperatures on Thursday.

Stormtracker 2 HD radar showed rain showers moving across metro Atlanta, and the Georgia DOT reported multiple wrecks.

"Patches of rain will pop up all over the state," Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said. "We'll see moderate showers but they won't last very long."

The rain will not be widespread and there could be a break in the clouds.

"We'll keep a lot of clouds around throughout the day and temperatures will be warming up into the low 70s," Minton said.

Temperatures will only drop into the 60s overnight. The average low is 39 degrees.

Friday's temperatures are expected to reach the mid-70s, nearly 20 degrees above normal.

Cooler air will arive in time for the weekend, but not the frigid air expected for most of the country.

"High pressure will build in and stall over north Georgia and we'll have more drizzle but cooler temperatures," Minton said.

Minton said we may not see a full day of sunshine until Tuesday.

The rain caused multiple problems on metro interstates on Thursday morning. A messy commute is expected again Thursday afternoon with more wet roads.

A crash in Whitfield County on I-75 closed the highway for hours, forcing cars onto a state highway for several miles.

Stay with Severe Weather Team 2 into the weekend for updates on the changing temperatures and precipitation.

Chief meteorologist Glenn Burns will be tracking any rain on Channel 2 Action News starting at 4.

Return at 4:30 a.m. on Friday for weather updates from Minton and Triple Team Traffic every 10 minutes.
