ATLANTA — Cockroaches were one of the problems an inspector recently found at a metro Atlanta soul food restaurant.

They’ve been serving up soul food at Walter’s Soul Food Café on Cleveland Avenue in southwest Atlanta for years.

The restaurant took a big dive in its inspection score this month. After two straight A’s, on Dec. 8 the restaurant failed a health inspection with a score of 57.

One customer told Channel 2’s Carol Sbarge that when she first started going to the restaurant it was good but she noticed the last few times the food didn’t seem fresh.

Letrice Lewis says it seemed like the food had been sitting all day.

The Fulton County Health inspector observed roach activity, noting live roaches in the dry storage area. The inspector also took points off for the restaurant not having a date marking procedure on food items and water pressure lacking at fixtures that require the use of water. Another violation involved hand washing. The inspector said the hand-washing sink wasn’t always available to employees.

Sbarge went to Walter’s Soul Food Café to ask about the violations. She is still waiting for a response from the management.

Lewis says even if a restaurant gets a B that is often too low for her to go back.

Walter’s Soul Food Café will be re-inspected this month.
