Atlanta City Council approves new police reform that bans chokeholds, other actions

ATLANTA — The Atlanta City Council unanimously passed a number of new legislation Tuesday night, including new police reforms.

The new police reform bans officers from using chokeholds and strangleholds. It also requires officers yell a warning before firing their guns. The new rules also instructs that officers can no longer shoot at moving vehicles.

The newly-approved rules are three parts of “8 Can’t Wait” national campaign. It is designed to bring change to police departments across the country.

The legislation now heads to mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’ desk for her signature.

The list of 8 requirements include:

  • Banning chokeholds and strangleholds
  • Require de-escalation
  • Require warning before shooting
  • Exhaust all other means before shooting
  • Duty to intervene
  • Ban shooting at moving vehicles
  • Require a use-of-force continuum
  • Require comprehensive reporting
