Apartment flood causes downstairs unit ceiling collapse

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gushing water, flooded floors and a ceiling collapse have caused a sleepless night for several Gwinnett County families.

Flooding began in an upstairs unit at the Bristol Court apartments late Wednesday night.

The ceiling of the downstairs unit collapsed under the weight of the water above and another apartment was also damaged. A tenant in a fourth apartment came home early Thursday morning to find water pouring into her downstairs unit as well.

The tenant of the upstairs apartment, Ashley Elliot, said water began gushing out from under the kitchen cabinets, causing about 4 inches of water on the ground.

She said no one could figure out how to turn the water off, even a security officer, and the maintenance person for the apartment took 45 minutes to arrive.

"It sounded like a waterfall the way it was coming up out from under the sink, out of the sink. Destroyed everything," Elliot said.

Overnight, crews pulled bags of soggy debris out of the apartments, but the three displaced families have been unable to reach apartment management.

Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach was also unable to reach apartment management.
