8-year-old signed with Atlanta Hawks loses cancer battle

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — An 8-year-old boy from Kennesaw who signed a one-day contract with the Atlanta Hawks lost his battle with leukemia Friday morning.

Atlanta radio host Jeff Dauler with the Bert Show posted the sad update to his Facebook page Friday

“He signed his Atlanta Hawks contract, got them into the playoffs, then strapped on his wings,” Dauler wrote on Facebook.

Earlier this month, Bert's Big Adventure, a nonprofit group that grants wishes for kids with chronic and terminal illnesses, heard about Lake's fight with leukemia and planned a special evening for him with his favorite NBA team.

On April 7, he signed his one-day contract with the Hawks and spent the evening watching the game courtside with his family, and got some one-on-one time with the players. The team even gave him a personalized jersey with his name written on the back.

Lake would have celebrated his ninth birthday on May 24.

“We rejoice knowing that he is cancer free and no longer in pain,” wrote Dauler. “But we ache knowing that his is no longer here with us.”

He signed his Atlanta Hawks contract, got them into the playoffs, then strapped on his wings. Rest in peace, Lake....
