COBB COUNTY, Ga.,None — Eight people accused of running a prostitution ring out of several metro Atlanta homes are facing federal charges.
"I wouldn't expect it in this neighborhood," neighbor Tommy Hill told Channel 2's Michael Buczyner.
Prosecutors said a home on Seminole Drive in Marietta was one of several homes across metro Atlanta that housed an elaborate prostitution ring that involved almost a dozen prostitutes. Authorities located homes in Cobb, Gwinnett and Fulton counties. Neighbors said they had no idea.
"The house is always dark. No clue anything was going on," neighbor Taversha Norwood said.
According to a 30-page indictment, Jose Almonte, Luz Gutierrez and six others recruited women and used the homes for prostitution, using business cards to solicit customers.
Prosecutors said housekeepers were also employed and paid up to $350 per week, plus room and board, to maintain the house, collect money from customers and watch the women.
"It's pretty surprising. I had no idea," Norwood said.
Just a five-minute drive from Seminole Drive, prosecutors said, the pair also managed another house of prostitution on West Atlanta Street. The indictment alleges women were brought from as far away as Massachusetts and New York to work as prostitutes in the homes. Prosecutors said recruiting started as far back as November 2010 and some of some of the women were in the country illegally.
