CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — A fun boat outing turned into a nightmare for a Georgia family.
The family was visiting the coast on Wednesday when they were packing up. Around 3:50 p.m., Chatham County police said the family put their child in a boat wearing a life jacket, and while they were packing the rest of their things up, the boat started drifting away.

Before they knew it, the boat was 300 to 400 yards away.
The police department’s marine patrol was called in to help find the child. Crews by boat went to Wassaw Island and found the boat, but not the child inside.

Authorities called in a helicopter to help out in the search for the boy. After nearly an hour, the boy was spotted walking through the marsh on the northwest part of the island. Thankfully, he was unharmed.
The helicopter landed near the boy and the crew took him to an awaiting marine boat. They then took the child to his family.
