‘Hearts will be heavy’: Sheriff’s office loses beloved detention officer in tragic crash

RABUN COUNTY, Ga. — The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the death of a beloved member of their community.

Detention Center Officer Courtney Faith Zajdowicz was killed in a crash in Mountain City on Wednesday. Authorities said she was on her way to work at the Rabun County Detention Center.

The 26-year-old had been with the Rabun County Detention Center for almost two years.

Sheriff Chad K. Nichols wrote an emotional Facebook post announcing her death.

“Courtney was a super friendly person with an incredible personality! Her smile was contagious, and she would always bring laughter to everyone around her. She was a beautiful person with a heart a big as her personality and her smile,” Nichols wrote.

Local departments will lower their flags to half-staff in memory of Zajdowicz.

“The next few days will be difficult for many, and our hearts will be heavy. We ask that you keep her family and her family of blue in your thoughts and prayers during this time,” Nichols said.

The sheriff’s office will be escorting her body back from the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta on Friday and authorities as asking for the community to line the sides of Hwy 441 to honor Zajadowicz and to show support for her family.

The sheriff’s office said they will have a tentative arrival time of 2 p.m.
