HALL COUNTY, Ga. — A 200-year-old cemetery in Hall County could soon be relocated after a homeowner's request.
Hall County leaders will vote Monday night on the small plot that holds about two dozen graves. Right now, the cemetery is in the front yard of where a lakefront home is being built.
The owners want to move the cemetery about 50 feet just to the other side of their driveway, but they need the county's approval to do it.
It was moved back in 1957 by the Army Corps of Engineers when it built Buford Dam and created Lake Lanier.
The 24 graves belong to the Thompson family, one of Hall County's founding families. The cemetery's current location off Dunlap Road isn't its original spot.
Channel 2 Action News was unable to reach the property owner or builders, but did speak with the archaeologist responsible for the relocation.
“We would expect to find coffin nails, no wood and find poorly preserved skeletal remains. We will rebury them in same pattern, same order," Tom Gresham said.
The Hall County Planning Commission will make a recommendation at its Monday meeting before the full council votes next month.
