ATLANTA — Atlanta police are searching for the person who fired several shots near a park where children were playing, injuring two people.
Police said a man pulled a gun and started shooting near Ira and Crumley streets in Mechanicsville during a Sunday evening cookout.
Police said the man fired his gun nine times while a softball game was going on nearby.
Witnesses told Channel 2 they heard shooting and scrambled to grab as many children as they could before taking cover.
"First and foremost, everybody went to grabbing kids," witness Percy Freeman said. "Two in this arm, two in that arm, just to get down. And once the shooting stopped, we went across the field and you got people out there shot."
Two men, a 33-year-old and a 42-year-old, were shot. Police said the shooter fired at close range, but both men are expected to survive.
Police said no children were hurt.
Although several witnesses saw the gunman, police said no one could provide a clear description.
