SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A teen is fighting to recover from critical injuries in a crash that took her best friend's life.
Westlake High School student Mycah Roberts died Sunday night. Her friend, Koryn McLeod is in Grady Memorial Hospital with multiple fractures after a crash in south Fulton County.
The crash happened around 10 p.m. on Cascade Palmetto Highway. Police say the SUV carrying the teens had somehow left the road and hit a tree.
Koryn's mother, Toni McLeod, says the friends, who were also teammates on Westlake's softball team, were going to celebrate the start of the new school year.
"They were going to celebrate. It was the weekend before school," McLeod said.
Then McLeod got the call that would change her life.
"It's surreal. It's surreal. They were three minutes from my house. They left my house and three minutes later -- this is what happened," she said.
McLeod says Koryn is not conscious, but believes her daughter will pull through. She says Koryn is going to be devastated by Mycah's death.
"She was her best friend. She was her best friend; two peas in a pod: Just an awesome girl," McLeod said.
McLeod says she's thankful for the person who called police after he saw the SUV crash. She says he may have helped give her daughter a chance to live.
"We just want to talk to him and tell him thank you. Thank you for helping because he didn't have to stop," McLeod said.
Fulton County police are investigating the cause of the crash.
