Local Facility Gets Mobile PET Scan

JOHNS CREEK — Officials at Emory John Creek Hospital are unveiling new equipment in the fight against cancer. They say the mobile position emission tomography (PET) scan unit is a highly-advanced form of imaging technology that is used primarily for detecting and monitoring cancer.

A PET scan takes images of internal organs and shows tissue abnormalities. Hospital officials say CT scans or MRI scans also can find abnormalities, but the PET scan can take it one step further and distinguish between normal and abnormal tissue, and determine if it still exists after treatment.

"Our mobile PET scanning machine brings a whole new level of cancer care to Emory Johns Creek Hospital," said radiology director Dr. Mary Morrison Saltz. "The presence of the PET scan technology on campus enhances our status as a comprehensive cancer treatment hospital by enabling us to easily correlate PET scan results with other imaging studies conducted right here at the hospital."

Hospital officials say the mobile PET scan is just the latest in a long list of cutting-edge services provided at the facility.
