Jury To Deliberate Tuesday In Boxer Slaying Trial

ATLANTA,None — A jury will begin deliberations on Tuesday in the slaying of a professional boxer.

The judge sent the jury home for the night on Monday after a day of closing arguments.

Vernon Forrest was gunned down in the middle of a southwest Atlanta street in July 2009.

The defendant, Demario Ware, is charged with the victim's death and armed robbery.

The defense and prosecution agree that Ware committed the armed robbery. The state alleges Ware's actions led to Forrest's death, while the defense disagrees.

Monday marks the fourth day of the trial.

In July 2009, Forrest pulled into a gas station in southwest Atlanta with his godson. Prosecutor Pete Johnson told jurors that Forrest stopped because he was concerned that his Jaguar had a flat rear tire and his godson needed to use the restroom.

While at the gas station, Ware robbed the boxer of his championship ring and Rolex watch.

The defendant later ran to a nearby apartment complex, and the victim followed. The state alleges that the defendant hid and then called his friends, Jquante Crews and Charman Sinkfield, to pick him up. Crews and Sinkfield arrived in separate cars.

The state believes that Sinkfield met Forrest on the sidewalk, the two had a conversation and Forrest walked away. Moments later, Sinkfield is accused of firing 10 shots -- 7 hit Forrest.

Crews picked up Ware.

The defendant's cousin testified that the trio met up at the defendant's home after the armed robbery and killing. The state alleges that is when Ware gave Sinkfield the weapon used in the armed robbery and they split up the ring and watch.

Sinkfield and Crews are also charged in the boxer's death.

Crews' trial is set to begin later this year. There is no word when Sinkfield will face a jury.
