Jury Finds Kid Rock Liable In Assault Case

None — Jurors ordered four defendants to pay $40,000 Friday in a lawsuit stemming from a 2007 fight involving musician Kid Rock.

Robert James Ritchie, better known as Kid Rock, will have to pay 15 percent of the compensatory damage charge. The rest of the charge will be split amongst his personal assistant, Wendall Murphy, guitar player, Jason Krause, and security guard, Brian Lang.

The musician testified Thursday that he exchanged some tough words with a fellow Waffle House customer but didn't start fighting until provoked.

The plaintiff, Harlen Akins, was seeking about $6,000 in medical fees and unspecified damages.

The musician and his crew stopped at a Waffle House on Buford Highway following a performance in Atlanta.

The rock star said Akins wouldn't stop talking trash to him and his friends. He said he tried to defuse the situation by offering to buy Akins breakfast, but that only seemed to make things worse.

Moments later, a fight, caught on camera, broke out. Eventually, Akins was forced outside and then a window broke. Akins claimed the musician cursed at him during the early morning fight, and then members of his entourage beat him up and smashed his cell phone.

The rock star said Akins is simply out to get money.

"I feel like I'm a big number in the lawsuit lottery," Kid Rock said.

Kid Rock pleaded guilty in March 2008 to a misdemeanor charge of simple battery, but he said Thursday that the whole trial was a joke.

"If we wanted to hurt this man, we could. We could have hurt him very, very bad," he said.
