'He immediately became a part of our family': Georgia officer killed in crash

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — An off-duty Tybee Island police officer was killed in a motorcycle crash, according to police.

Officer Tron Lewis, 32, was driving his motorcycle on Ogeechee Road around 9:30 a.m. Saturday before crashing into an SUV, the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department said.

Lewis died at the scene. The driver of the SUV suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.

"Though he served with our agency for less than a year, he immediately became a part of our family," the Tybee Island Police Department said. "He always had a friendly smile for his fellow officers and motivated all of us to be at our best."

Flags around Tybee Island have been lowered to half-staff and Lewis' patrol vehicle will be parked in a place of honor in front of the Police Department.
