State authorities accused Quitman Police Chief Lawrence McGee of keeping a donated handgun intended for a meeting raffle.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation began looking into the matter on Feb. 3 after the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office requested an inquiry into theft allegations.

According to investigators, the Quitman Police Department received a donated gun in January 2026 for a raffle at a regional traffic enforcement meeting, but the 44-year-old police chief kept the gun for himself.

A Brooks County grand jury returned an indictment against McGee, leading to an arrest warrant. McGee was arrested and booked into the Brooks County Jail on one count of felony theft by taking and one count of violation of oath of office.

The GBI turned the case file over to the Southern Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

State investigators are asking anyone with information regarding the case to contact the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Thomasville at 229-225-4090.
