COLUMBUS, Ga. — The Columbus Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit is looking for help from the public to identify a man suspected of stealing mail.
According to police, on Oct. 18, 2022, workers at Whitewater Realty in Columbus reported the company’s mail was stolen out of a public mailbox.
A check for $37,000 was one of the items stolen.

The investigation led to locating the check, which had been “washed” and altered, then deposited at a Bank of America ATM in Stonecrest, Georgia on Sept. 21, 2022.

Officers with the Columbus Police Department remind you that the safest way to mail a check or other mail that contains private, sensitive financial information is to take it directly into the post office and hand deliver it to postal workers, rather than utilize public mailboxes.
