ATLANTA, Ga. — Former University of Georgia star and current Pittsburgh Steeler wide receiver Hines Ward held his annual charity weekend Friday through Sunday. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefited the Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation.
The Hines Ward Charity Weekend included the family fun and fitness day with a football and cheerleading camp for children and teens, the Hines Ward celebrity bowling game and a dinner with the football star and several of his teammates.
Ward grew up in Forest Park with his Korean mother. His father, who is black, was not in his life. He created the Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation, in part, to promote equality for biracial Korean children and help them have a better quality of life. The foundation also provides educational programs for children.
Ward played quarterback and wide receiver at UGA from 1994-1997. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of 1998 draft and has been with the team ever since. He has won two Super Bowls and was named the MVP of of the Steelers' Super Bowl XL win in 2006. He is a four-time Pro-Bowler.
Ward's former teammate Jerome Bettis was just one of several current and former NFL stars to attend one of the events.
