Fireplace Ashes Cause DeKalb House Fire

LITHONIA, Ga. — A DeKalb County home was heavily damaged by fire early Sunday.

The blaze broke out at about 4 a.m. in the 1300 block of Persimmon Court in Lithonia.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they said flames were shooting from the roof of the house.

Fire investigators said the blaze was started after the homeowner put ashes from his fireplace inside a container and placed it in the garage. It then caught fire.

Authorities said everyone made it outside the house safely, however one person was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation. No other injuries have been reported.
