Father Of Five Killed By Stray Bullet

ATLANTA — A family is in mourning after an Atlanta father of five was killed by an apparent stray bullet.

It happened just after 3 a.m. at a house in the 500 block of Norfolk Street in northwest Atlanta.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Mike Petchenik talked to relatives of 58-year-old Bernard Culpepper, the shooting victim.

Homicide detectives spent the morning questioning witnesses in the neighborhood and collecting a great deal of physical evidence from the scene.

Culpepper's family told Petchenik that they want those responsible taken off the street.

"I was walking down from the store and I heard the shots," said Ricky Williams, a friend of Culpepper.

"Mr. Culpepper was lying on the floor," said Williams.

A Channel 2 Action News photographer shot video of a bullet hole in the door of Culpepper's home.

Police said another bullet damaged a window sill, and yet another one pierced a wall. Police said one bullet struck Culpepper in the hip, ultimately killing him. Investigators believe the shooting started out in the street.

Williams believes someone was trying to rob Culpepper's cousin, but a stray bullet hit him instead.

So far, police said they do not have any suspect's in Culpepper's slaying.
