Family Member: Man Shot Mom, Killed Uncle

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Police captured a man who they said killed one person and wounded another in a shooting at a home in south Fulton County Tuesday afternoon.

Both victims were shot at a house in the 6000 block of Birdseye Trail, off Buffington Road east of Interstate 85.

Family members told Channel 2 Action News reporter John Bachman that a man shot both his mother and his uncle. The alleged shooter's uncle later died.

Shirley Darden, the victims' aunt, said her niece was shot in the arm and her nephew was shot in the chest. Her nephew later died at a local hospital.

Darden said the alleged shooter, her niece's son, is 20-year-old Steve Austin.

"It was my niece's son, I'm told, the one that did the shooting. He's just 20 years old. I don't know what could've happened, but he has had an episode twice, so I guess this is what it led to," said Shirley Darden, the victims' aunt.

A rifle was taken from the home as officers cleared the crime scene.

"I just think little Steve was just having a nervous breakdown. He had to be out of his mind to do something like this," Darden said.

Darden said there had been fights before.

"Young people these days, they all got something to say and don't want to do what you ask them to do," Darden said.

Austin was apprehended in DeKalb County and was being transferred back to Fulton County.

Police have not yet released the victims names.
