El Nino: The Impact on Georgia

ATLANTA — El Nino is back. Atlanta's Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns and Severe Weather Team 2 forecast that it could result in the harshest season Georgia has experienced in decades. On December 16th at 8 p.m. Burns and his team will lay out what North Georgians need to know about the potential weather threats ahead and how to get prepared.

With over 31 years forecasting North Georgia weather with Severe Weather Team 2, Burns’ experience proves invaluable when it comes to predicting how global patterns end up affecting local weather. He’s weathered both El Nino and La Nina effects, and he explains the key ingredients that create El Nino.

“It’s a weather phenomenon that starts in the Pacific,” said Burns. “Its ripple effects spawn different resulting weather patterns in different parts of the country. We will show how it can lead to tornadoes, heavy rains, snow and icy conditions across Georgia.”

Severe Weather Team 2 will compare this year’s El Nino with the conditions in the past and highlight the similarities that brought the paralyzing ice storm in 2013 and the historic Dunwoody tornado in 1998.

“Our weather technology has greatly advanced since the last strong El Nino,” said Brad Nitz, Channel 2’s 5 p.m. meteorologist. “The newest addition to our weather technology is Ice Tracker 2, which helps our team of weathercasters predict where ice damage will occur up to 72 hours in advance!”

“Of course, Severe Weather Team 2 uses the world’s most powerful radar, StormTracker 2HD and 3D,” added Karen Minton, Channel 2’s morning meteorologist. “Channel 2 is the only station with this kind of cutting edge technology. We’ll explain how it works to detects tornadic debris, dust, rain and more.

“El Nino: Impact on Georgia” is a direct result of Channel 2’s goal to keep your family safe by alerting viewers to the upcoming possible dangerous weather, and how to best prepare to keep their families prepared and safe.
