Dilapidated Apartment Complex Shut Down

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga.,None — A run-down Stone Mountain apartment complex has been shut down. Residents said management shut their water off and told them they have to move out in a week.

Killings and fires are among numerous problems that have plagued the Colony at Stone Mountain Apartments for years, leaving units on the brink of collapse.

“It’s like hell. It’s like living in hell,” resident Lisa Mitchell told Channel 2’s Craig Lucie.

As Lucie surveyed the buildings Tuesday, he spotted holes in the walls, broken windows, overgrown weeds and buildings that caught fire but were never repaired.

“We have no management, no hot water, no AC. They don’t want to fix anything,” said resident Shay Maddox.

Other residents said management walked away months ago, but will show up every once in a while to collect rent in cash. Most don’t pay it though. One resident said it had been two years since she paid rent.

Lucie looked for answers at the leasing office, but the blinds were drawn. He also called and emailed GFI Capital, the Houston, Texas, company that owns the complex, but no one responded. In contrast to the grim scenes at the complex, GFI’s online advertisements feature neat units and a swimming pool.

“They didn’t give us notice or nothing. They say we have to be out the 16th,” a resident said.
