Bullets Fly Near Riverdale School; Lockdown Lifted

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga.,None — Riverdale Middle School was locked down for about 45 minutes Wednesday after shots were fired in a nearby Clayton County neighborhood.

News Chopper 2 was over the area and video showed yellow crime scene tape marking two possible crime scenes near Patrick Henry Court and Roberts Drive.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Jones talked to residents who reported hearing about six shots.

Quenisha Mims showed Jones where a bullet went through her window, almost hitting her.

Investigators said a Riverdale police officer shot at a burglary suspect who they said tried to get away from police.

Police said the suspect's vehicle matched the description of a car that was involved in a hit-and-run on Saturday. When police tried to pull the vehicle over, they said the driver drove off and slowed down in a cul de sac where it appeared he was going to stop for the officer. Investigators said when the officer got out of the patrol car, the driver took off again, hitting a construction worker.

That's when investigators said the officer fired several shots at the suspect's car, but the driver drove off once again, hitting several mailboxes. The officer gave chase on foot, but the suspect got away.

Orange markers label tire tracks where, police said, the perpetrator drove over mailboxes. Police said the perpetrator is still on the loose.

The lockdown at the school was lifted and the campus returned to normal function after police completed their investigation, according to Charles White of the Clayton County School System.

Officers impounded the suspect's car which they said was reported stolen after the incident. The officer is on paid administrative leave.
