Basement flood closes LSU dental school in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS — Louisiana State University’s dental school in New Orleans is closed because a basement flooded over the weekend, shutting down the computer network and phone system.

LSU Health Sciences Center spokeswoman Leslie Capo says heavy rains on Saturday left 1½ feet (about half a meter) of water in the basement of the main buildings. She said the dental school and main clinic would remain closed Tuesday.

The main clinic sees hundreds of patients a day. A much smaller clinic across the street remained open.

But because the computer network was down, dental clinic staffers did not have any way to reach patients to tell them appointments were canceled.

Capo says in a news release that the school and clinic hope to reopen Wednesday.

4.22 inches of water fell over the metro New Orleans area in a single hour, causing many roadways to flood, the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board said.
