ATLANTA,None — Parents at a Buckhead elementary school were notified Tuesday that a student had brought a BB gun to school.
Atlanta Public School officials said a 9-year-old brought the gun to a third-grade class at Sarah Smith Elementary on Jan. 18. After the child's classmates found out about the gun, they alerted a teacher, APS representative Keith Bromery said. He said the gun was not loaded.
"They reported it proactively to the teacher, who investigated it right away," Bromery told Channel 2's Ryan Young.
The student has since been suspended for a week, authorities said.
Parents picking up children were outraged to hear the news Tuesday afternoon.
"What's to stop him from bringing a little .22 (caliber-gun) next time?" said Robert Klenberg, the father of a third-grade student.
He said the incident should have never happened.
"I don't know who's at fault, but if it can happen, it scares me," Klenberg told Young.
But Klenberg and other parents still praised the school for its efforts.
"I really hate that. It's unfortunate, but what I know is this school does everything they possibly can to take care of their kids," said grandparent Billy Green.
