Animal Abuse Complaints Spark Investigation

ATLANTA — The Department of Agriculture said it investigated complaints of animal abuse at a pet wholesaler in Atlanta called Sun Pets.

A manager at the facility, Barry Wisebram, told Channel 2's Tom Jones a member of the animal rights group PETA went undercover and began working at the business. He said that employee reported the alleged abuse.

Wisebram told Jones the complaint centered around the living conditions of some animals. Wisebram told Jones that all the animals are housed safely and with great care and must be in good condition in order to sell them.

Inspectors told Jones they only found one violation and it dealt with some rusty cages that housed chinchillas.

"We haven't found any significant violations at this facility at this time," said Venessa Sims-Green, an agriculture inspector.

PETA provided this statement to Channel 2 Action News: "PETA's investigation uncovered disturbing conditions in which animals were allowed to suffer at Sun Pet," said PETA Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch.

Wisebram said it's clear to him that PETA had an agenda with the business.
