5-year-old escapes crash, climbs barefoot to save family

Lexi Shymanski is a smiling 5-year-old who proves that even the littlest people can be heroes.

Lexi's was riding in the car with her 10-week-old brother when her mother fell asleep at the wheel and their car went flying down a 40-foot embankment in the Canadian Rockies.

Somehow the 5-year-old managed to pull herself out of the mangled SUV by unbuckling her car seat, pushing away the airbag and pushing open the door.

Lexi then climbed barefoot up a 40-foot embankment where she flagged down a passing car.

That driver, who happened to be a paramedic, rescued Lexi's brother and called for help.

Little 10-week-old Peter needed neurosurgery to reduce brain swelling and Angela Shymanski, who was a swim teacher, suffered a broken back in two places and is now in a wheelchair.

She spent nearly 3 weeks in the hospital.

"I'm still astounded at what happened," Angela Shymanski told Dr. Oz in an episode airing Monday September 14. "Every airbag went off, the dashboard was pushed in."

"Mommy was asleep," Lexi told Dr. Oz as she recounted the crash. "She never woke up."

The family has started a GoFundMe page to pay for medical expenses that require out of town treatments.
