NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — Officials with the Newton County Sheriff's Office are telling visitors to the Alcovy River to wear a life jacket and not to swim by themselves.
Two people have drowned in the river in the past nine days. That's the same number of deaths in all of 2009.
The river has Class 2 and Class 3 rapids in some areas and it can get dangerous with the rocks, officials said.
"As long as you swim with some adults down there, that's paying attention to your kids," said swimmer Brian Lanier. "I mean, (there's) no better place than to have them out in the summertime."
Both victims, a 17-year-old and a 59-year-old, drowned at Factory Shoals Park.
