Art, scavenger hunts, gardens await at this north Georgia spot

Sautee, GA -- Looking for something to do while still social distancing? Head north of Atlanta to check out art, experience a scavenger hunt and enjoy flowers.

The Sautee Nacoochee Center re-opened its doors to the public. The opening is done following CDC and OSHA Guidelines for Phase 2 Opening as defined by the State of Georgia.

Highlights of visiting the center during this time include:

  • A new temporary exhibit featuring the work of Mike Craven in the Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia. This retrospective exhibit presents Craven’s work from 1970 to 2020, from utilitarian vessels to face jugs and whimsical pieces.
  • New artwork on display and for sale in the Cultural Center. Two gallery shops feature the talents of juried jewelry artists in a show called “Sparkle and Shine”. Purchasing items from the gallery shops supports local, working artists as well as the work and mission of the center.
  • Vibrant fiber artwork in the hallways of the Cultural Center. This exhibit highlights texture and pattern with pieces created from silk, beads, felted wool, scraps and more.
  • A Discovery Tour for children and parents. This scavenger hunt reveals stories of the Sautee and Nacoochee Valleys as told through the Sautee Nacoochee Center buildings and grounds. A prize is available for those completing the ten questions.
  • The Native Peace Garden. Visitors can see and walk among plants native to north Georgia. The Garden is located behind the Sautee Post Office.
  • The sprawling, green Sautee Nacoochee Center campus, which includes picnic tables, a walking trail, gardens, playing fields and a playground. The campus is open to all from dawn to dusk. Visitors are reminded to follow all social distancing practices recommended by the Centers for Disease Control.
  • The Explore Helen & Sautee Nacoochee phone app. This free download can be used as a driving tour or as a guide to White County landmarks and landscapes.

To ensure everyone’s safety, visitors begin their visit in the Folk Pottery Museum. Signs in the parking lot direct visitors to the entrance. The traffic flow continues through the museum to the Cultural Center. Tape on the floor supports traffic patterns and social distancing. Masks are available upon request.
