Limo catches fire on prom night

NATICK, Mass. — The start to prom night went up in flames for ten high school students in Massachusetts whose limousine caught fire on the way to the big dance Friday night.

The limo was near the intersection of Brook and Union streets when the Natick High School students inside suddenly smelled smoke around 6 p.m.

"There was smoke coming through the cabin, the door, because we were at the front, and we just got out, and it started to catch fire," Alex Goudsmit said. "It started to get really big, and then it looked like it was going to explode."

"It was actually kind of scary, but we got out pretty quick," Linnea Fitzgerald added.

Lucky for them, another prom ride happened to be right behind them, also on the way to Lombardo's in Randolph.

"The trolley was just driving behind," Goudsmit said, "and then one kid came out, and he's like, 'Come on board.'"

The cause of the fire is unknown, but school officials said the engine of the limo may be to blame.

By the time the students had arrived at their prom, nearly everyone had heard what had happened.

"I don't know, I thought it was kind of cool," Goudsmit said. "It's a story."

Natick police tweeted that firefighters had doused the flames again later in the night as the limo fire rekindled, suggesting the "car might be evil."

"Well, it's Friday the 13th," Fitzgerald joked.

All ten students were able to leave the prom on the same party bus that saved their day.
