Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for several metro counties

ATLANTA — The National Weather Service has issued a Thunderstorm Warning for Pike, Upson, Troup, Meriwether, Spalding, Fayette, Coweta counties that expired at 1:00 a.m.

The greatest threats during that time will be damaging winds, heavy rain and lightning. Winds gusts could reach upwards of 60 mph.

Nitz has already received reports of hail in the Cedartown area.

As the storm continue to move to the east after midnight, they could still produce an isolated strong-to-severe storm, but Nitz said he expects to see a weakening trend at that point for these storms.

“I don’t expect enough rain for a long enough time to lead to any flooding problems, but as the heavy rain is falling, certainly, ponding on roads with areas of poor drainage will be a problem temporarily,” Nitz said.

Nitz said there will be some drying and cooling, with things clearing up by the morning rush hour Thursday morning.

“Behind this, another cold front Friday into the weekend, turning cooler, so we’ll be down into the upper 30s to lower 40s Saturday morning, frost Sunday morning and highs into the low 70s for Monday,” Nitz said.
