Gusty winds and falling temperatures ahead for Thursday night

ATLANTA — Gusty winds and cold temperatures are ahead for Thursday evening.

A high wind advisory is in effect for all of northern Georgia, north of Interstate 20. The advisory is set to expire at 8 p.m.

Winds are expected to reach 20-25 mph throughout the evening, with gusts up to 35 mph, Severe Weather Team 2’s Brad Nitz said.

“That could knock down some additional trees, and of course that could always bring down power lines,” Nitz said.

The winds will diminish throughout the evening, slowing to about 10-15 mph.

The winds will pick up again on Friday afternoon, with sustained winds around 20 mph and gusts upward of 30 mph.

As a cold front moves through north Georgia Thursday night, a few isolated showers are expected in the evening hours.

“Don’t be surprised if you have a passing light shower this evening or even overnight tonight,” Nitz said.

The cold front will makes its way into northern Georgia Thursday evening and into Friday, dropping temperatures overnight.

Temps are expected to dip to the high 40s in the metro early Friday morning and those lows will continue to drop to the high 30s by Sunday morning.

Those cold temperatures will rebound throughout the day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with highs in the low 60s.

By the beginning of next week, temperatures will rise back to the low 70s with a possibility of more rain as early as Tuesday.

Tree damages Cobb County apartment

People are cleaning up the mess left over from severe weather that hit metro Atlanta Wednesday night.

Strong winds brought down a tree that tore through one family's apartment on Favor Road in Marietta.

Five family members were inside the apartment when the tree came crashing down late Wednesday night.

Ashley Mendoza said she was on the phone and pretty much ignored the storm until the lights went out.

"My stepdad opens my room and he said, 'Come here, come here' and he said the roof fell," Mendoza said.

A large tree branch snapped and ripped a hole through the master bedroom. Mendoza said her stepdad, Oscar Marcea, injured his ankle trying to protect her mother.

Marcea’s friend served as a translator, saying it's an incredibly difficult situation for the family.

"They need help. They need somewhere to go. There's no light at this point. There's no electricity. No one is working in this house. They had to call off today," said Marcea's friend Alberto Vasquez.

Crews from Cobb EMC came by overnight and shut off the power to several apartment buildings in the area.

A supervisor told Channel 2's Darryn Moore the tree damaged a transformer that feeds electricity to the complex.

Storm damage reported across metro Atlanta

Channel 2's Audrey Washington found many downed trees in Hall County.

The storm came through and left broken tree limbs and scattered debris just about everywhere you look in the area.

On McEver Road, trees crashed through two neighboring homes. The storm also damaged two vehicles parked at a house on Flat Creek Road and Stephens Road in Oakwood.

The director of Hall County Emergency Management said the clean-up process should take some time and that power probably won’t be restored here until late afternoon. He did say no injuries were reported.

One woman said she and her husband had to duck for cover when the storm hit and sent tree crashing through their home.

“And we were going to the bathroom to seek cover, that's when I heard the big bang and that's when we went down on the floor and he got on top of me to protect me,” said Patricia Ferguson.

Neighbors said the storm sounded like a freight train came through the area. They believe this was all the work of a tornado. But emergency management says this was not a tornado that hit.
