Parents voice frustration after board yanks new superintendent contract

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — Nearly 300 community members packed a Henry County School Board meeting to voice their frustrations over the recent choice for superintendent.

Many parents told Channel 2's Nefertiti Jaquez they were fuming after learning the school board voted during a special meeting Monday night to take back its job offer to Dr. Timothy Gadson.

Officials say his contract demands exceeded what has been traditionally extended to previous superintendents.

“Parents need to be involved in the process,” parent McKenzie McDaniel told Jaquez. “Let’s negotiate where we can have some commonality, especially if you're saying he's the best candidate."

Parents told Jaquez they were stunned by the decision, especially because Gadson was the sole candidate up for job.

But there were others who stood by the board's decision.

“I didn't want his contract. I was upset he was the only candidate they brought to us to pick from,” parent Lisa Davis told Jaquez.

Then there was confusion.

At the end of the meeting, two board members announced the board members never saw the contract that their attorney sent over to Gadson and even admitted they didn't see Gadson's counteroffer until Sunday.

Then by a majority vote, his contract was withdrawn.

“I would like to negotiate with the board because I stand ready to serve as superintendent of Henry County board of schools,” Gadson said.
