AMAZON PRIME DAY 2017: Clark Howard's guide of 'what you need to know'

ATLANTA — Amazon is offering big discounts today for members, and many of you have already checked out the deals.

But what does Channel 2 Consumer Advisor Clark Howard think about Amazon Prime Day?

“The biggest change this year versus last year is the big push on Amazon’s own products and services,” Howard said.

Amazon products -- such as its virtual home assistant Echo and Echo Dot -- have been big sellers in the beginning stages of Amazon Prime Day, according to Howard.

“Last year, it was more about different consumer goods. But this year, they’re trying to bring you tighter into Amazon’s orbit with deals on the Echo and various other Amazon products,” Howard said.

Another big difference this year, according to Howard, is that shoppers will notice how many online competitors aren’t running sales to battle Amazon.

“This year, a number of retailers said, ‘We’re not going to add extra glow to Amazon. We’re going to ignore Amazon and we’re going to do our own thing,’” Howard said.

While Amazon boasts new deals as often as every five minutes, Howard said the company has gained a reputation for convenience, not deals.

“This Prime Day is trying to change that psychology so people feel the other 364 days a year that Amazon is a bargain destination,” Howard said.

Before you buy, Howard suggests checking out sites such as Frugal.com to compare prices.

“No matter what Amazon says is a deal, before you click to purchase, go into another window and comparison shop,” Howard said.

In addition to the U.S., 12 other countries are participating in Amazon Prime Day.
