Woman killed trying to buy cell phone at apartment complex

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A woman trying to buy a cell phone was shot and killed at an apartment complex in DeKalb County.

The shooting happened Friday night at the Woodcrest Village Apartments on Woodcrest Walk in Lithonia.

Police said the couple came to the complex around 9:00 to buy a cell phone they had located on an internet application.

According to investigators, the couple met three men outside in the parking lot in front of one of the buildings.

Police said the husband became suspicious of the men's intentions, and that's when one of the suspects demanded their phones.

The suspect then pulled a gun and shot the wife. She later died at the hospital.

"They got out and spoke to each other and once the husband got suspicious of the subjects that were trying to make the sale and one of the subjects pulled a gun and ended up shooting his wife,” Lt. Shane Stanfield said.

Wayne Robinson has lived at the complex for five years and said this is the first time something like this has happened.

"To hear what happened right out in front is devastating and I'm sorry to hear that," he said.

He questioned what brought the couple to the area.

"I wouldn't meet a stranger, especially at night. I mean, that's kind of dangerous," he said.

No arrests have been made at this time.

"I hope everything gets resolved and everyone gets back to their normal lives," Robinson said.
