Officer chases down sheriff accused of exposing himself in park

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — New video shows an Atlanta police officer chasing and arresting the DeKalb County sheriff.

Sheriff Jeffery Mann is accused of exposing himself Saturday night in Piedmont Park.

After an officer saw him, he ran away into a neighborhood on 9th Street.

Home surveillance video shows part of the chase and shows Mann being taken away in handcuffs.

Channel 2's Nicole Carr learned the sheriff was in his county-issued vehicle when the incident occurred.

The county manager said the county doesn't control Mann's budget or the rules he sets for his equipment.

"I think it's unfortunate. There's probably something that's going on with the sheriff that I'm sure concerns a lot of people," resident Stan Saunders said.

Mann faces indecency and obstruction charges. He released a statement saying he's trying to clear everything up with the city of Atlanta.

The Georgia Sheriff's' Association hand-delivered a letter to Gov. Nathan Deal on Tuesday morning asking him to appoint a team to investigate the sheriff. They want a team of two sheriffs and the attorney general to investigate Mann's criminal charges and report back to the governor within 30 days.

It could lead to a 60- to 90-day suspension, due to morality concerns. Deal has to make the call to start the process.
