20-year-old shot, killed walking to bus stop

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A mother is grieving after her 20-year-old son was shot and killed at an apartment complex in DeKalb County.

Malachi Dennis was found dead April 26 inside an apartment complex off Hariston Road in Stone Mountain.

Police said the shooting happened just before 7:30 p.m.

"Someone saw him walking down the street. It was daylight," the victim's mother said.

Dennis' mother said he had just spent the day with his dad and was likely walking to the bus stop in front of the complex when he was killed.

"He ran in and ran out, (saying) 'I'll be back mom.' And I can't imagine that's the last time I'm going to hear 'I'll be back mom,' but it is," she said.

Police said Dennis' wallet was still on him.

"Regardless of what happened, or who approached him, he did not think he was in that type of danger," his mother said.

Detectives are struggling to find witnesses, a motive and the person who killed the 20-year-old.

His mother said he wanted to pursue sports medicine in college and loved spending time with his family and friends.

"He was such a happy-go-lucky kid," she said.
