Warrant On Theft Charge Issued For UGA Safety

ATHENS, Ga. — University of Georgia police say they have obtained an arrest warrant for freshman football player Alec Ogletree on a misdemeanor theft charge.

Police Chief Jimmy Williamson says his officers have spoken to Ogletree and to officials with the school's football program and that Ogletree plans to turn himself in Friday.

Williamson says the warrant stems from a June incident when a student reported a scooter helmet missing from the university's student center. Williamson says the helmet was later reported to be in Ogletree's possession. After a followup investigation, a warrant was issued.

Williamson says the 6-foot-3, 215-pound safety from Newnan will be booked on a misdemeanor theft by taking charge and then likely released on bond.

Channel 2 Action News sports director Zach Klein spoke with a UGA official who said Coach Mark Richt was aware of the situation. No further information was released.
