What is the Full Corn Moon and when will it grace the skies?

Skygazers will get their once-every-three-years view of the Full Corn Moon this week thanks to what can best be described as an astronomical scheduling conflict.

The full moon will be at its peak Wednesday. Typically, the September full moon is referred to as the Harvest Moon because it is normally the closest full moon to the autumnal equinox, WDAF reported.

Every third year, however, a full moon rises in October that falls even closer to the fall equinox, claiming the Harvest Moon moniker for itself and relegating the September full moon, the last of the summer, to the Corn Moon.

Per the Farmers’ Almanac: “This full Moon name is attributed to Native Americans because it marked when corn was supposed to be harvested. At the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this Moon.”
