Seattle ice cream shop posts sign prohibiting police inside with guns

SEATTLE — A popular Seattle ice cream parlor is emphasizing it is a gun-free zone and posted a sign on its door prohibiting police officers from entering if they are armed.

Molly Moon Neitzel decided to put up the sign at her namesake shop which is located in the area known as the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest zone, after the area was taken down.

“Last week, as CHOP was being dismantled, and there was a flood of police officers here in the neighborhood, they were intimidating and causing some of my black and brown employees to feel unsafe,” Neitzel told KIRO-TV. 

Neitzel has "gun-free zone" stickers at her seven other locations, but this is the only one prohibiting armed police.  

Mike Solan, president of the Seattle Police Officer's Guild denounced the sign.

“I feel it’s divisive rhetoric. I view it as political pandering,” Solan said. “It’s more divisiveness at a time when we need more unity.”

Neitzel still welcomes officers, just as long as they are not carrying guns.
