Pine-Sol approved to kill coronavirus on surfaces, EPA says

Another household cleaner has officially been deemed potent enough to combat the novel coronavirus on frequently used surfaces.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has added Pine-Sol Original Multi-Surface Cleaner to its running list of products deemed effective against SARS-Cov-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, ABC News reported.

According to a news release issued by The Clorox Co., testing from a third-party laboratory revealed the disinfectant is proven effective against the virus with a “10-minute contact time on hard non-porous surfaces.”

The company said the product should be applied with a clean sponge or cloth and should remain wet on the surface for at least 10 minutes before rinsing, Fox Business reported.

According to ABC News, the EPA reminded consumers when using any of the registered disinfectants on its list to follow all label instructions “for safe, effective use,” including the amount of time the surface should be visibly dampened by the product.

With this new development, The Clorox Co. hopes the new “Pine-Sol kill claim will increase access to disinfectants that can help prevent the spread of COVID-19,” Chris Hyder, vice president and general manager of the cleaning division at Clorox, said in the news release.

The EPA’s list now includes nearly 500 products that meet the agency’s criteria for use against SARS-CoV-2, Fox Business reported.
