More than 600 people in 11 states sickened by recalled bagged salad

A parasite outbreak linked to bagged salad has sickened 641 people in 11 states, federal health officials said.

In June, Fresh Express expanded a recall of bagged salads containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage and carrots because of the presence of cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that causes diarrhea, loss of appetite and nausea, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The recall has expanded as health officials continue to investigate. So far, 37 people have been hospitalized. No one has died.

The contaminated salads were distributed to stores in 31 states. Some were sold under other brand names at retailers including Aldi, Giant Eagle, Hy-Vee, Jewel-Osco, ShopRite and Walmart.

States with cases include Georgia (1), Indiana (195), Illinois (198), Kansas (5), Minnesota (73), Missouri (57), Nebraska (55), North Dakota (6), Pennsylvania (2), South Dakota (13) and Wisconsin (36).
